Donald W. Williams
Donald W. “Booger” Williams, 69, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in the Carl Vinson Veterans Medical Center in Dublin. Donald was born Aug. 10, 1942 in Orangeburg, S.C. and had lived in Appling County since 1999. He was retired from the B. F. Shaw Company where he had worked for 20 years as a pipe fitter and he was a member of the Local Pipe Fitters Union 150. Williams was a member of the United States Air Force for 11 years serving as an airplane mechanic. He was a member of Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church. Donald was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Allison Nicole Orvin and a great-granddaughter, Samantha Catlyn Orvin. He was the son of the late Bryant and Lurline Chavis Williams.

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held a called meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Following the first of two closed-door sessions for personnel purposes, a motion was made by Commissioner Ronnie Rentz to advertise for and hire an assistant road superintendent. Commissioner Charlie Leggett seconded Rentz’s motion. Chairman Lewis Parker called for a vote and Rentz and Leggett voted in favor of the motion. Commissioners Sarah Boatright, Theodore Wilkerson and Jasper Tomberlin opposed the motion. [Full Story »]

Kenneth J. Waithe, newly elected District 1 Council Member was sworn in by Superior Court Clerk Floyd Hunter at the regular city council meeting on Jan. 10. Waithe told the council he was looking forward to working with everyone.
Betty Livingston, District 5, and Dr. Esco Hall, Jr., District 2, were reelected to serve additional terms. They were also officially sworn in. Livingston and Hall both stated they were thankful for serving another term and are looking forward to working with everyone as well. [Full Story »]

Pirates defeat Herons in OT, lose to Blue Tide
The Appling County Pirate basketball team traveled to face the Brantley County Herons on Friday, January 13 with the Pirates being able to pick up the win 59-54 in overtime. The Pirates next contest came on the road against the Long County Blue Tide on Saturday, January 14 with the Pirates taking the loss 40-70.

Appling Christian Eagles notch back to back wins
The varsity girls (10-0) and the varsity boys (8-2) improved their season records with wins over Peoples Baptist Academy out of McDonough. On the road, January 6, the Lady Eagles outscored their opponent 56-20. Leading scorers for the ACA team were Christian Beasley (14) and Victoria Cox (12). Lindsey Johnson led all rebounders with 17.
