John B. Johnson, Sr., 77, died Friday, January 28, 2011 in Bacon County Hospital. John was a native and life long resident of Appling County and was born Nov. 12, 1933 to the late Aaron Barry and Vicie Leola Murphy Johnson. He was a member of Big Oaks Church of God. Mr. Johnson was a retired Navy veteran of 21 years having served in Vietnam. He was a member of Vietnam Vets of America. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Johnson.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John Barry and Connie Johnson of Baxley; one granddaughter, Crissy Johnson of Alma; special buddy, Nikolas; one aunt, Oletha Teston of Odum; one nephew, Earl Gribble of Baxley; four nieces, Bertie Giddens, Jeanette Dubbley, Betty Giddens and Sherry Youngblood, all of Baxley and special cousin, Opal Wynn of Odum.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30 at Big Oaks Church of God with the Revs. Virginia Herrington, James Medders and Mark Grimes officiating. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery with military honors.
Active pallbearers were Curtis Smith, Charlie Leggett, Larry Atkinson, Daniel Morris, Carol White, Ernie Manning and Mike Hall.
Honorary pallbearers were Senior Adult Class of Big Oaks Church of God, men’s Sunday School Class and Vietnam Veteran Post 981.
Musical selections were rendered by Sheila Kennedy, Bonita Anderson and Debbie Taylor.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
