Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp visited Baxley and spoke at the South Georgia Republican Luncheon on July 6 as part of his campaign promise to attend at least one GOP event each month. Kemp spoke to the crowd of around thirty Republicans about how the Secretary of State’s office has made cuts, and how it has improved.

“I campaigned on making sure that we had initiatives that would help people in our State, especially small business people and the folks that we deal with every day,” said Secretary Kemp. “I think it is important that we as elected officials are keeping our promises. I have done that.”
Kemp championed his fiscally conservative record and what his office has done to save our state money by saying, “I know that we cannot spend more than we make. I know that when times are tough that we have to tighten our belt, and I don’t think there is an agency in state government that has done as much as we have to help the legislature deal with the budget deficits here in the State of Georgia.”
Kemp informed the attendees that the budget has been reduced twenty-seven percent over the past five years, and that under his watch, personnel has been reduced almost thirty percent.
The Secretary of State went on to inform the crowd of other changes that his office has made. Kemp stated that his agency has started zero-based budgeting; a method of budgeting in which all expenses must be justified.
“We are committed to making sure that everyone knows that we are spending things that are necessary in the secretary of state’s office, and not spending money that is not necessary.”
Kemp went on to tell about other subjects, ranging from technology within the office, stopping voter fraud, and setting a date for the 2012 presidential primaries.
