Smith sentenced for voluntary manslaughter
District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces the plea and sentencing of Kachestta Smith. Superior Court Judge E. M. Wilkes sentenced Smith to 20 years, with 15 to serve in prison and the balance on probation in Appling County Superior Court on January 24.
Smith pled guilty to the charge of voluntary manslaughter stemming from the death of her four year old daughter, Jatia McCall. The child died on July 8, 2009 as a result of multiple blunt force injuries. Smith was represented by Donte Hudson of the Public Defender’s Office. The state was represented by Jan Kennedy of the Baxley District Attorney’s Office.
