What does November 11 mean to you? Is it just another day or is it just another government-recognized holiday that allows you to get a day off? November 11 is Veterans Day; a day set aside for us to honor the sacrifices of the men and women that have served (and continue to serve) this country for generation after generation.
I’m sure most of us know a family member or a friend who is a veteran. Growing up I had uncles and a close cousin that served in the military during wartime and other family members that served during peaceful times in our country’s history. These men will never know how much I respect the sacrifice they made for this country and how much appreciation I have for them.
I also have a dear friend that served in World War II and he and I often visit together. I would never betray his confidence, but I can tell you some of the stories this man has shared with me about his wartime experience are simply incredible. I hope he will allow me to write and share his story with you one day, but for now simply know that this man is a true hero in my book and sacrificed tremendously for our freedoms. As examples of his courage this man was shot down twice, a prisoner of war twice and escaped twice. He witnessed death and destruction many of us could never imagine. His stories have literally brought tears to my eyes. Following his service to our country he returned home to his family, built a strong business and became a leader in his community. To him I simply say, “Thank You.”
Men and women have served this great country since its inception in order to protect the freedoms that we enjoy and some gave all. Would it be too difficult to simply say, “Thank You”, to those around us that have served this country and give us the freedom we all take for granted too often?
Happy Veterans Day to all the men and women who have and continue to serve this country.
