On Tuesday, January 25, the Baxley/Appling County Chamber of Commerce held its 63rd Annual Meeting at the Appling County Elementary Complex. The meeting was opened by 2010 Chamber President Norma Cortes. Cortes offered a warm welcome to all in attendance. She then introduced the Rev. Ronnie Rentz to give the invocation.
Following a delicious meal, Appling Christian Academy (ACA) Principal Gerome Granade stepped to the podium to introduce the STAR Student for ACA. The award was presented to Don Phillips, and Phillips selected Melanie Claxton as his STAR Teacher. (See complete story in next week’s issue.)
Next, Appling County High School (ACHS) Principal Gene Starr presented the STAR Student Award for ACHS to Caitlin Crosby. Crosby selected Appling County Primary School Teacher Genevieve Garnes as her STAR Teacher.
James Clark was the next award presenter and he presented the Excellence in Agriculture Award to John Elbert Tillman.
Stephen Tillman made the next presentation. Tillman presented the Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee. Nominees included Stephen Douglas Harris, Delois Williams-Jones, Rufus McDuffie and Jordan Sellers Vaughn. The 2011 Inductee is Delois Williams-Jones.
Of all the awards presented during the annual meeting, the excitement always builds to see who will be selected as the Citizen of the Year. Among those nominated for the prestigious award were Dawn Melton, Denise Graham, Peggy Miles, Frank Miles and Merry Burkett. The 2010 Citizen of the Year was announced and the recipient was Denise Graham. Judy Johnson and Sonia Williams nominated Graham.
Incoming President Steve Worthington made a special presentation to outgoing President Cortes and also introduced the guest speaker for the event. Lee McBride, comedian, storyteller, evangelist, and preacher, entertained the audience with his hilarious and inspiring stories.
