According to Appling County Sheriff reports at approximately 4:00 a.m. on June 21, deputies responded to Dubberly Road in Northern Appling County in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the body of a Hispanic male identified as Matul Porfirio, age 25. A subsequent investigation by the Appling County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the shooter as Jose Filo Gonzalez of 199 Gamble Road, Baxley.
On Tuesday, June 21 the sheriff’s office issued a press release to Savannah media asking citizens to be on the lookout for Gonzalez as well as an all points bulletin to other law enforcement agencies. He was described as a 50-year-old male, 5’7" in height, 200 pounds in weight, and gray hair. Gonzalez was believed to be driving a 1993 Red Ford Ranger king cab, with a broken right rear taillight lens.
Gonzalez was apprehended in Polk County Florida by the US Marshall Service late Wednesday, June 22. He was arrested on a murder warrant. Gonzalez was to be returned to Appling County as soon as extradition proceedings were completed, but he would not waive extradition and is now being held until a Governor’s warrant can be obtained to have him returned to Appling County to stand trial for the murder charge.
