Donald Douglas “Bud” Stoner, 87, of Baxley, died Saturday, December 13, 2014 at his residence. Stoner was born September 28, 1927 in Ball Ground to the late Andrew Clayton Stoner and the late Lao Cook Stoner. He served in the United States Air Force and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Stoner was a retired teacher and administrator for the Appling County Board of Education. He enjoyed his long retirement years spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, camping all over the Southeast, playing golf and cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Survivors include his wife, Pat McLean Stoner of Baxley; two daughters, Suzy Mercer of Baxley and Laury Sikes and husband, David, of Lawrenceville; five grandchildren, Logan Mercer, Whitney McGouyrk, Haley Mercer, Emily Sikes, and Olivia Sikes; two great grandchildren, Jace Williams and Abby McGouyrk; one sister, Doris McHan of Ball Ground; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Winston Collins and Lucille McLean Parham.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 16 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Wigley, the Rev. Jill Jenkins, and the Rev. Winston Collins officiating. Interment followed in the Stewart Family Cemetery in Bacon County.
Active pallbearers were Larry Knight, Doug Doyle, Jeff McLean, Steve Pickering, Troy Lorier, Jimmy Anderson, and Mike Godowns.
Honorary pallbearers were the Fishermen Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, staff of South Georgia Hospice, and all friends in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Claire Tanner, David Williams, Elaine Black Edwards, Julie Hawkins and Winston Collins.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
