Concerted Services, Inc., your local Community Action Agency, is marking forty-five years of service to the southeast Georgia area by celebrating May as National Community Action Month. “We take pride in what we’ve accomplished offering much needed services to low-income families. We strive, in the spirit of hope, to help those families achieve a high degree of stability in their lives. Community involvement is also vital in our work because it helps to bridge the socio-economic divide that exists in our communities and nation,” stated Ms. Ophelia Gaines, CSI Executive Director.
“For the first time in their lives, many people during this current economic crisis have faced unemployment and financial insecurity. But for the millions of families and individuals living in poverty, financial insecurity is a scenario they face daily,” stated Dr. Esco Hall, CSI Executive Board member. “For them, it is more than just not being able to eat dinner occasionally at a restaurant; it is whether or not they can afford to eat at all. It’s more than just forgoing a vacation or other luxuries, it’s a matter of should they buy medication or pay rent? Put gas in the car or pay the electric bill? Buy food or shoes for their child,” continued Dr. Hall.
Community Action Agencies, like Concerted Services, Inc., are non-profit, private and public organizations established under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to fight America’s War on Poverty. CAA’s are a primary source of direct support for the more than 44 million people who live in poverty in the United States today.
Concerted Services serves 28 counties in southeast Georgia and is a forceful advocate at the state, federal, and local level for low-income and disadvantaged people. Programs operated by CSI in Appling County include: Commodity Distribution, Community Care, Educational Talent Search, Emergency Food and Shelter, Energy Assistance, Head Start, Nutrition Program for the Elderly (Senior Citizen Center - Congregate and Home Delivered Meals) and Weatherization.
The entire staff of CSI invites all citizens to join in celebrating and recognizing Community Action. Together, we all can strengthen and improve the lives of our friends and neighbors of our communities.
