Fifty years ago, Stan Brobston had just returned from two Western Pacific tours of duty as a VA-112, A-4 pilot on the USS KITTYHAWK (CVA-63). He married Sandra Holloway in Lemoore, CA. Sandy was the babysitter for a squadron mate’s child. She had just graduated from The College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA. Sandy and Stan had corresponded for two years while he was overseas.
For their 50th anniversary on August 22, 2014, Stan and Sandy took an American Cruise Lines trip around the coastline of Maine. Accompanying them on their anniversary trip was Sandy’s sister and Matron-of-Honor, Dolly Moura and her husband, Leland. Also helping celebrate were Sandy’s brother, Bill Abney and his business partner, Rick Buttner. All of them reside in California. When the ship arrived at Boothbay Harbor, ME, they had lunch with their Best Man of 50 years ago, Larry Decker and his wife Meredith.
An amazing coincidence occurred as they were taking a tender-boat to Castine, Maine. Dolly and Billy were teasing Sandy about living in “the middle of nowhere, Baxley, GA” when a man on the boat said, “I’ve been to Baxley, GA.” He and former resident, dentist Bart Purvis, and he were close friends. They shared a model boat hobby. He had visited Bart in Baxley several times. He was from Michigan.
It’s a small world, a wonderful world, and Stan and Sandy have truly been blessed. We wish them many more years of happiness together.
