Appling County Retired Educators hold May meeting
The Appling County Retired Educators meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannon on Wednesday, May 18 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. The inspiration was given by Joy Connelley. The pledge to the flag was led by James Twiggs. The group remained standing for musical selections with Kay Eunice. Gretchen Miles read the minutes from the April meeting and Elizabeth Dunn read the treasurers’ report. Both were approved as read. Eveline Peacock sent five get well cards, one sympathy card and one thinking of you card to members since the April meeting.
Elizabeth Dunn told the group that the work on the memorial has been completed. This included engraving and sandblasting. Fifteen bricks have been purchased by ACREA in memory of deceased members.
The May program included the recognition of ACHS Valedictorian Kara Clark and ACHS Salutatorian Tyler Williams. Their parents accompanied both girls. They also recognized retiring school system employees Debra Brantley, Mary Ann Ellis, Dealva Johnson, Mary Alice Landmon, Helen Lightsey and Cindy Schell. Honored guests were presented certificates.
The guest speaker was Dr. Jan McKay, local chiropractor. She demonstrated some exercises to help relieve pain and tension. She discussed the importance of proper nutrition and named at least two food items they should never eat. Dr. McKay reminded the group they should be using daily supplements to maintain proper chemical balance. She ended her session by reading a paragraph from the book God’s Code. Dr. McKay also brought her marketing director, Karen Chapman to the meeting. Chapman told them of the plans to expand the services that are going to be provided by a back and neck pain center including a nurse practitioner, physical therapy, and pain management.
The state GREA convention was held in Savannah on May 10-12 with 10 local members attending. Shirley Phillips designed a slide show depicting some of the activities that were enjoyed. Appling County Retired Educators were awarded 14 of 14 certificates for both participation and excellence. They were also recognized as the number one seller of “Spotlight” ads (93) in the state. Thanks again to all the businesses and individuals that participated in this project.
James Twiggs made a motion that ACREA purchase a brick at the new Georgia Retired Educators’ museum in honor of Georgia Teacher of the Year, Pam Williams. The motion was seconded and approved by the group.
A meal was prepared and the room decorated by the ladies of the Church of God. A local bank sponsored the meal. The Eighth Grade Beta Club with the help of sponsors Mary Collins and Dr. Pam Johnson sent begonias and zinnias for the members that came to the meeting. They also sent two hanging baskets to be used as door prizes. Thanks to everybody.

The next meeting will be at Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall on June 9 at 10:30 a.m. They will be presenting the ACREA scholarships, GREA Leadership award and GREA Community Service award.
