The changing values and integrity in America during the past 50 years has plummeted. Movies and songs in the 1930s and 1940s had an uplifting quality for the recipients. Today, much of the “music” and songs are cheap and vulgar, as are many of the motion pictures.
The lack of concern for one’s appearance has changed to where what was formerly the appearance of low life, or a bum, has become common and often sloppy dress. Some males walk public streets with oversize pants hanging so low until their posterior is exposed to the public. Not too many years ago, they would have been arrested and jailed for public indecency.
Human life has become cheap. Brutal murders occur at many times the rate that existed fifty years ago, assisted somewhat by an easygoing justice system that provides murderers with free room and board, health care, a social life—often better than the victim had.
Years ago, taking someone’s life would more often than not result in the death penalty that would be executed in a prompt way, rather than the long-drawn-out manner so customary today.
Today to an ever-increasing extent, the most bizarre is considered acceptable. What was once wrong is now okay. The low-life culture is demonstrated by the songs and movies that have no redeeming or uplifting value and generates an even worsening level of integrity. Songs and movies from the 1930s to the 1960s had qualities that valued common decency; this is considered out-of-fashion in today’s liberal culture. Today much “popular music” is vulgar, crude, and cheap as are many of the movies attended by the younger generation.
There was a time when most of the people would have had nothing to do with such things as abortion and gay marriage. Today, though, abortion and gay marriage are in the spotlight, even in many churches, and threatens turn society and many churches away from the Judeo/Christian values that built us into a once strong people.
There is a rapid weakening of traditional family values: marriage between a man and a woman; the sense of responsibility regarding making it on your own; belief in God, and pride in your country and your workmanship.
There is a horrifying increase in out-of-wedlock births.
A waning of regard for public school teachers and people in positions of authority is eroding our great nation.
The languishing of a vital Christian faith in our society results in a surge in pagan activity. Pornography, homosexuality, and things already alluded to in this article are not the reason our society is losing its values. The reason is that the one factor that will revitalize high ethical and moral values in society, the Christian faith, is not being taught in an effective manner. Science has not led people to believe less in God but rather it has made Christians timid about what Christianity teaches. All-too-often, the church simply acquiesces and goes along a “hey it is okay everybody is doing it world” instead of being the church God intended.
