Willie Baxley, Sr., 85, died Sunday, January 16, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Baxley was born in Appling County Jan. 9, 1926 to the late Estell and Bertha Buckins Baxley. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean Conflict and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Willie was a member of Appling County Blue Glass Band. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Louise Hand Baxley and two sons, Buddy and Larry Baxley.
Survivors include a daughter, Johnnie Faye Holder of Baxley; sons, Michael Baxley, James Crosby, Jerry Leggett, all of Baxley, Gary Baxley of Alabama and Bobby Crosby of Holly Ridge, N.C.; one brother, Alfred Baxley and wife, Estelle of Baxley; grandchildren: Brandy Baxley-Gutierrez and husband, Paul, Angel Johnson of Black Rock AK, Cindy Burlesson and husband, Mark of Hoxie, AK, Karen Crosby-Branch and husband, Cliff of Baxley, Lisa Taylor, and husband, Steven of Baxley, Tracey Johnson of Baxley, Christina Mack and husband, Tyrone and Scott Crosby, both of Richlands, N.C., Jeremy Baxley and Daniel Baxley, both of Meridan, Mississippi and Sierra Baxley of Baxley; and 17 great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with the Revs. Gary Conger and Billy Gardner officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Michael Baxley, Robert Brett Linan, Sr., Paublo Gutierrez, Sr., Waylon Slaughter, Cliff Branch and Joe Baxley.
Honorary pallbearers were the staff of Fulghum Discount Drugs, staff of Appling Healthcare System, Dr. Graham and all family and friends in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Dale Spell, Courtney Spell, Debbie Taylor and Joyce Alterman.
Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.
