The Arts Council is sponsoring a contest to design a playbill/poster for the upcoming play by Laurie Jo Upchurch, entitled: “In the Pines.” The play’s cast will consist entirely of local citizens (a casting call will be announced later), and it will be performed this fall at the ACHS Fine Arts Center under the direction of Ms. Upchurch. A co-production of the Arts Council and Appling Community Theatre, the play will also be sponsored by the Baxley-Appling County Chamber of Commerce, the Baxley-Appling County Board of Tourism, and the Development Authority of Appling County.
The title of the play, “In the Pines,” is taken from an old folksong made popular by Dolly Parton and other country and folk singers. The theme of the play is the folk-life and folkways of Appling County and the surrounding region, including the rich gospel and folk music of the region. The pine forest has always been a key feature of the region’s environment and has had a tremendous impact on its culture and social, agricultural and economic development. As we all know, Appling was once a major leader in turpentine and other related forest industries.
The poster design will be used on posters, banners and flyers advertising the play, and on programs and tickets.
Designs submitted may be paintings, drawings, photos, computer generated graphics, or any other medium that can be reproduced to use on banners, posters and flyers. The design can include the title of the play as an integral part of the design, or the design can be a base painting/illustration that the Arts Council may add titles and captions later. The size of the design can vary from an 8 and half-inch by 11-inch page to 11-inch by 16-inch, as long as it can be reduced and enlarged to suit our purpose.
The judging will be coordinated by Judy Johnson, who organizes the Arts Council Fall and Spring Art and Handcraft Shows. A panel of independent judges will choose the winning design using criterion established by Mrs. Johnson and the ACAC Board of Directors.
The winning entry will receive a reserved seating season pass to all Arts Council events, a $50 cash prize, and of course, their name or initials included in the reproductions of the design.
All entries must be submitted by June 23, 2014 to the Appling County Chamber of Commerce. An entry form will be available at the Chamber to attach to your submission.
Also, Laurie Joe, the playwright, is collecting local histories, stories, folktales, songs and tidbits of information about the folkways and heritage of Appling County and the surrounding area to include in the play. If you have some family histories, stories, local gospel tunes or music you think would be illustrative of our culture, contact the Arts Council at the number following and they will put you in touch with Laurie Jo. These stories may be simple, amusing antidotes or tales your family has passed down about grandpa and his old mule, old forgotten farming practices, when grandpa and grandma got their first radio, television or even electricity.
For additional information about the playbill/poster contest or to submit stories to Laurie Jo, you may contact the Arts Council at 912-278-2772 and check out our website at www.applingarts.com.
