A homegoing celebration for Mrs. Irma Jean Jones Gillis was held Tuesday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. from Baxley Church of God with Bishop Nathan Flowers officiating. Interment was in Old Field Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Irma Jean transitioned from this life on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Appling Healthcare System Pavilion in Baxley, surrounded by a host of loving family and friends.
Irma Jean was born Sept. 11, 1944 in Hazlehurst to the late George Jones and the late Florence Barney Jones. She was married to the late Jerry Gillis. Mother Gillis was a faithful member of the Pentecostal Miracle Deliverance Church and served as Mother of the Church. She was a retired certified nursing assistant and worked for a number of years at the Appling Nursing Home and Appling Healthcare System.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Mary Artis Williams and a brother, John J. Jones.
She is survived by four children, Carolyn Jones, Gwen (George Allen) Jackson, Tony Gillis, all of Baxley and Teresa (Vernon) Turner of Statesboro; special niece, Joyce (Thomas) Corley of Atlanta; sister, Georgia Anna Murphy of St. Petersburg, FL; sisters-in-law, Joanne Jones of Baxley and Nellie Ruth Perry of Gainesville, FL; aunts, Gertrude Gamble of Baxley and Garaldine McFlannen of Augusta; grandchildren, Angela (Darrell) McCoy, Chasity Brown, Steven (Kande) Gillis, Chris (Krissy) Gillis and Shane Gillis; 20 great-grandchildren; special friends, Dorothy Howard, Josie Bell Wilson, Becky Holton, Vera Henry, all of Baxley, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Active pallbearers were Steven Gillis, Wayne Banks, John Murphy, Keith Rogers, Shane Gillis, Arick Banks and Norris Barney.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Errol G. Graham, M.D., and staff, Appling Healthcare System Pavilion staff and Spanish Oak Hospice staff.
Musical selections were rendered by Peggy Fletcher, Gene Smith, Carletha Wright and Christine Sease. Her grandchildren ministered through praise dance.
