The Appling County Pirates (10-7 Overall, 7-3 Region 1-AAA) traveled south to Ware County (13-5, 7-1 3-AAAAA) to play the Gators in a non-region matchup on Wednesday, March 26. Junior lefthander Stacy Davis started the game for the Pirates. Davis dealt for three innings and allowed four hits, three runs, and struck out two batters. Mason Parker entered the game in relief of Davis and completed two innings. Parker allowed no runs, only one hit, and struck out three. Sophomore right-hander Jeremy Norris made his varsity début on Wednesday and finished the last inning of play. Norris allowed five hits and five earned runs. The Pirate offense didn’t catch fire in time to surmount their seven run deficit. Skylar Branch had an impressive night at the plate, going 2-2 with two singles and a sacrifice fly that scored the Pirates’ only run of the game. Griffith Faircloth (1-3, 1B), Mason Parker (2-3, 1B), and Gage Patton (1-4, 2B) accounted for the rest of the Pirate offense. The Pirates were defeated by a final score of 8-1.
The Pirates next traveled to Tattnall County (11-7, 7-4) on Friday, March 28. Both teams had to battle the elements as a steady rain soaked the field throughout the course of the game. The Pirates started Sophomore Griffith Faircloth, who pitched five complete innings, allowed two earned runs on four hits, and struck out five batters. Stacy Davis entered the game in relief of Faircloth and pitched one complete innings. Davis allowed one hit and struck out two batters. The Pirate offense battled all night long, scratching out one run on a sacrifice fly by Cody Thomas. Cody’s hit scored Mason Parker from third. The Pirates had six hits on the night, but couldn’t string them together to start a rally. Will Shumans (1-3, 1B), Gage Patton (1-4, 1B), Skylar Branch (1-4, 1B), Jake Britt (1-2, 1B), and Tyler Sapp (2-2, 1B) contributed the six Pirate hits of the night. Appling County was defeated 2-1, making their region record 4-2.
The Pirates next faced Wayne County (8-7, 4-3 3A-AAAA) on March 31 losing their third straight 5-3. The Pirates next two were wins, 19-1 over Johnson of Savannah (1-14-1, 0-10-1) on April 1 and 4-2 over Islands High (8-8, 6-5) on April 3. The Pirates ended the week with a 5-1 loss to region foe Pierce County (15-3, 11-1) on April 5.
The Pirates upcoming games include Southeast Bulloch (10-6, 10-2) at home on April 8, traveling to Jeff Davis (12-4, 8-2 2-AA) on April 10 and hosting Beach High (3-12-1,0-9-1) for a double-header on April 11. All the games are scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. except for the first of the two double-header games, which is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
