The Appling County Pirates (8-4 Overall, 5-2 Region 1-AAA) traveled to Savannah on Friday, March 21, to face off against New Hampstead High School (3-11, 3-6) for their fifth game of region play. Starting pitching for the Pirates was right-handed sophomore Griff Faircloth. Faircloth pitched three innings and struck out six of the nine batters he faced. Mason Parker entered the game in relief of Faircloth and pitched two complete innings and struck out four. Neither of the Appling County pitchers allowed a run on the night.
The Pirate offense strung together seven hits and seventeen runs throughout the course of the game. The hits were made by Jake Britt (1-2, 1B), Stacy Davis (1-1, 1B), Skylar Branch (1-2, 1B), Dylan Crosby (1-2, 1B), and Connor Simmons (3-4, 1B). Connor Simmons led the team in hitting against New Hampstead with three singles.
The Pirates hosted the Brantley County Herons (6-7, 5-4) for their next game of region play on Tuesday, March 25. The Pirates came in to this game with a region record of 4-1. Both teams started left-handed pitchers, but the ace pitcher for the Pirates, Connor Simmons, continued to mow down the opposing team’s offense. Simmons struck out 11 batters, allowed no earned runs in five innings and ended up collecting the “W” for the Pirates. The pitching for the Pirates was impressive, but the Pirate offense stole the show. Appling County ripped ten hits in five innings of play and scored eleven runs. The Pirates also got their second homerun of the season on Tuesday. A towering three-run bomb to right field sent left-handed senior Gage Patton trotting around the bases. Other hits on the night included Tyler Sapp (1-1, 1B), Jake Britt (1-2, 1B), Griffith Faircloth (1-3, 1B), Mason Parker (1-2, 1B), Skylar Branch (2-3, 1B), Gage Patton (2-4, HR, 1B), Triston Carter (1-3, 1B), and Will Shumans (1-3, 1B). The Pirates run-ruled the Herons 11-1 after five innings of play, making the region record for the Pirates 5-1.
The Pirates traveled to Ware County (9-5, 4-1 3-AAAAA) to face the Gators Wednesday, March 26, for a non-region matchup with the Pirates losing 1-8.
The Pirates final game of the week came at region foe Tattnall County (11-5, 7-3) on Friday, March 28. The Pirates stayed close but came up short, losing 1-2.
The Pirates have four games scheduled for the upcoming week beginning by hosting non-region opponent Wayne County (6-6, 3-2 3A-AAAA) on Monday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. The next game for the Pirates will also be at home against region foe Johnson of Savannah (1-12, 0-8) on Tuesday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a region matchup in Savannah on Thursday, April 3 against Islands High (7-7, 5-4) at 4:30 p.m. The final game of the week will be a region game at home against Pierce County (13-2, 9-0) on Saturday, April 5 at 6:00 p.m.
