According to Chief James Godfrey on January 22 at approximately 3:54 p.m., officers of the Baxley Police Department and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office answered a call to 660 Orange Street in reference to a fight in progress. While the officers were in route to the call, they received further information about shots being fired and someone being shot. On arrival officers secured the scene and assisted EMS with a gunshot victim. After a brief investigation, officers discovered that a domestic argument had taken place, which escalated to the point that a firearm was pulled and discharged striking Anthony Martin, 30, of Baxley, in the face area. Martin was treated at the scene and then transported to Appling HealthCare System. He was later transferred to Memorial in Savannah by life flight for his injuries he sustained during the incident.
A lookout was posted for three persons of interest that had fled the scene prior to the officer’s arrival. After officers learned the identity of the subjects, they went to an address, where two subjects were detained pending further investigation. After a few hours the third subject turned himself in to law enforcement authorities, where he was detained pending further investigation.
The GBI and their crime scene unit were called to assist in this incident. As of report time, Martin was still at Memorial listed in critical, but stable condition.
