Samuel “Jimmy” Carter, Jr., 68, of Toombs County, Lyons, died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Carter was born May 24, 1942 in Appling County to the late Sam Wiley Carter, Sr. and the late Alla Mae Herrin Carter. He was a member of Satilla Freewill Baptist Church in Hazlehurst. Jimmy was in the United States Air Force and served as an Aircraft Jet Engine Mechanic. He was retired as a senior sawmill supervisor for New South Inc. in Cassatt, S.C. and was a member of Miliken’s Creek Masonic Lodge #302 F&AM in Cedar Crossing. Jimmy was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Carter.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Judy Dixon Carter of Lyons; two daughters, Wendy Carter of Cassatt, S.C. and Tina Carter Watson of Uvalda; one son and daughter-in-law, Woody and Stephanie Hattaway of Vidalia; two sisters, Marilyn Woodall of Waycross and Sharone Carpenter of Uvalda; and grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner Hattaway, Tyler and Tristan Humphries, Tracen Tedder, Jon Michael, Megan and Karlie Watson.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 3 in the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Revs. R. M. Warren and John Stephens officiating. Interment followed in Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery in Uvalda with Masonic Rites.
Active pallbearers were Dixon Clark, Bennett Dixon Jr., Dale Ferguson, Parker Edge, Bill Martin, Jack Pye, Wayne Deas and Larry Rentz.
