Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach reports that on Wednesday, January 8, offender Blake Thomas, 19, escaped from a work detail on West Allen Street in Baxley. Thomas is a probationer in the custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections. Soon after his escape, Thomas was apprehended in a wooded area east of Merrell Miles Road by Appling County Sheriff’s Deputies.
Thomas was released back to the custody of the Department of Corrections. Thomas is now facing charges for escape in Appling County and a probation violation in Lowndes County.
The following are incidents handled by deputies with the Appling County Sheriff’s Office over the past few days.
On Jan. 4, answered a call to Sumner Road/Surrency in reference to an unresponsive subject. Dyitha S. Devereaux, 78, was found unresponsive. The Appling County Coroner was notified and stated Ms. Devereaux died of natural causes.
Jan. 4, answered a call to Barfield Street/Surrency in reference to damage to property. A complainant stated a subject came to his yard with his vehicle doing damage to his yard and also slung mud all over his house. The complainant was advised of legal action he could take.
Jan. 4, answered a call to Phillipi Church Road in reference to harassing phone calls. The complainant stated a subject had been calling and following her. Investigation continues.
Jan. 4, answered a call to Spell Street in reference to a theft. The complainant stated she bought a cell phone from a subject and when she went to activate the phone she was told the phone was stolen. Investigation continues.
Jan. 5, answered a call to Lawson Drive, which led to the arrest of Juan Alfonso Sanchez, 23, of Baxley. Sanchez was charged with possession of marijuana less-than-one ounce.
Jan. 5, answered a call to Lake Mayers Road in reference to a family domestic dispute. Two sisters had a disagreement, which led to a confrontation. One of the sisters had left the residence before the officer arrived.
Jan. 6, complainants came to the Appling County Sheriff’s Office to report possible child molestations that occurred on Wayne Jones Road. Investigation led to the arrest of Kevin Trent Herrington, 34, of Baxley. Herrington was charged with five counts of child molestation.
Jan. 6, answered a call to Highway 121/Surrency in reference to threats. A complainant stated her ex-boyfriend that lives in Arizona continues to send threatening text messages to her.
