Swain Funeral Home announces the death and funeral services of Esther L. Johnson Rushing, 85, of Baxley. Mrs. Rushing died Sunday, December 8, 2013 at The Pavilion.
Esther was born December 22, 1927 to the late Madison Leon Johnson and the late Anna Lee Anderson Martin and was the widow of the late John Roger Rushing. She was a Homemaker and a member of the Baxley Church of God where she was active in the Women’s Ministries and the Young at Heart. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth R. Rushing and a grandson, Shane Atkinson.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Gerald Hood of Alma and Debbie and Mike Carter of Baxley; son and daughter-in-law, Madison and Gail Rushing of Surrency; sister, Cherry Lynch of Baxley; eight grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, December 11 at 2:00 p.m. from the Baxley Church of God with the Rev. Lamar Lee and the Rev. H. Virgil Carter officiating.
Mrs. Rushing lay in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment followed in Red Oak Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Swain Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Jason Rushing, Mitchell Rushing, Adrian Atkinson, Jerimie Hood, K’leb Williams and Jerad Stone.
Honorary pallbearers were the staff of The Pavilion, Bill and Joyce Tomberlin, Nancy and Jerry Williams, C. T. and Debbie Haynes, Colvin, and Jean Griffis, Nell Sheffield, and The Young at Heart of the Baxley Church of God.
Music was by Javan Anderson and the Rev. Lamar Lee.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
