Johnny Wilson “J.W.” Lewis, age 79, of Baxley, died Monday morning, November 18, 2013 at the Appling Healthcare System. Lewis was born March 3, 1934 in Jeff Davis County and was the son of the late John and Seenia Varnadore Lewis. He was a retired farmer and a member of Miles Chapel Baptist Church. Lewis served in the United State Air Force in the Korean War and was a member of the Veterans of America. He was preceded in death by four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Laverne Griffin Lewis, of Baxley; four daughters, Patricia (Jimmy) Newton, Martha (Jackie) Strickland, Joan (Lonnie) Lightsey and Peggy (David) Taylor, all of Baxley; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, two step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. from Miles Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Rogers and the Rev. Doug Weisel officiating.Interment followed in church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Tyler Griffin, Ryan Taylor, Shawn Nail, Richard Taylor, Stacy Sellers and Rusty Roberson.
Honorary pallbearers were Mr. and Mrs. Danny Griffin, Mr. and Mrs. Randall Odum, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Odum, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mosley, Mr. and Mrs. Huel Medders, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Crapps, Dr. Errol Graham and staff and all friends in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Amanda Griffin Frary and Elaine Black Edwards.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
