Lizzie Alice Griffis, age 81, of Blackshear, died Friday morning (11/15/13) at the Pierce County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Ms. Griffis was born February 11, 1932 in Screven to the late Lonnie Melton and Mattie Viola Thornton Griffis. She had lived in K’ville most of her life before moving to Blackshear in the early 90’s. She had farmed with her family for many years, but retired from the school nutrition department at Fourth District Elementary School in the Appling County School System. She was also a longtime faithful member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her brothers and sister-in-law, Elder Ivey and Lula Griffis and Luther Griffis; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes and Rufus Lightsey, Fannie and Seatten Herrington, and Thelma and Vernon Murray; and a special niece, Glenda Cason.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Elder J.E. Griffis (wife, Sara Joyce) of Hazlehurst, Ronnie Griffis (wife, Sue) of Bonaire, Gwen Riggins (husband, Larry) of Fitzgerald, Wendell Cason of Patterson, Jeanette Johnson (husband, Homer Lee) of Ellabell, Howard Herrington (wife, Joanie) of Baxley, Albert Herrington (wife, Cathy) of Baxley, Ray Lightsey (wife, Mary) of Jesup, Mattie Griffis of Jesup, Gene Lightsey (wife, Gwenell) of Jesup, Jerry Lightsey (wife, Ruth) of Surrency, Larry Lightsey (wife, Cheryl) of Odum, Veda Nell Griffis (husband, Earl) of Odum, Robert Murray (wife, Rosalyn) of Screven, and Tena Hart (husband, Gerald) of Blackshear; and many great nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service took place Sunday afternoon (11/17/13) at 3:00 p.m. at Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Wayne County. Burial took place in the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
