The Appling County Pirates (7-2 Overall, 6-0 Region 1-AAA) travelled to face the Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors (4-4, 2-3) on October 25 and were able to remain unbeaten in Region 1-AAA play after a 42-28 win. The win also secured a playoff spot for the Pirates who will have an open week this Friday.
The Pirates will host the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (6-1-1, 4-1) on November 8 as the Pirates celebrate Senior Night with a chance to win the Region Championship.
Southeast Bulloch is tied for second place in the region and is coming off a win over Beach High (0-8, 0-5) 42-21 and will host Tattnall County on November 1. The Pierce County Bears (8-1, 5-1) is the other team tied for second place in the Region after a 30-6 defeat of Savannah High (1-7, 1-4). The Bears have also secured a playoff spot and will be off this week before finishing the regular season in Brantley County (3-5, 2-3). Tattnall County and Brantley County are currently tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Region.
The Pirate defense was able to score the first touchdown of the game after Samuel Ryan recovered a Tattnall County fumble and returned it 25-yards for the score. Israel Jaramillo added the extra point to make the score 7-0 with 11:43 left in the first quarter.
CJ Alexander was able to put the Pirates up 14-0 after an interception and return of 40-yards for a touchdown at the 7:14 mark in the first quarter.
Tattnall County was able to cut the Pirate lead in half, 14-7, after a 14-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter.
Tattnall County’s next score came on a one-yard touchdown run after they recovered a Pirate fumble to set up good field position. The extra point was good to tie the score 14-14 at the 4:53 mark in the second quarter.
Alexander put the Pirates back in the lead returning the ensuing kickoff 72-yards for a touchdown making the score 21-14.
Pirate quarterback Vernon Dasher was the next to score on a three-yard touchdown run to increase the Pirate lead to 28-14 early in the third quarter.
Later in the third quarter Pirate Maurice Paulk scored on a 25-yard touchdown run to make the score 35-14.
The Pirates final score came on a five-yard touchdown run by Dasher at the 10:44 mark in the fourth quarter increasing the lead to 42-14.
Tattnall County had two late touchdown runs to make the final score 42-28.
