The Appling County Pirates (4-2 overall, 3-0 Region 1-AAA) hosted the Pierce County Bears (5-1, 2-1) on October 4 in front of a near capacity crowd with the Pirates able to get the win 38-20.
The Pirates will travel to face the Brantley County Herons (2-3, 1-1) on Friday, October 11. The Herons are coming off an 8-14 loss to Tattnall County (3-3, 1-2). The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
Scoring highlights
The Pirate defense was able to get the first score of the game on an interception and a 59-yard return by Devon Moore. Israel Jaramillo added the extra point to make the score 7-0 at the 7:35 mark in the first quarter.
The Pirate offense was next to score on a one-yard touchdown run by Derrix Henry. The extra point was good making the score 14-0 with 1:34 remaining in the first quarter.
On an untimed down at the end of the first quarter due to a penalty Pirate CJ Alexander was able to intercept a Pierce County pass and return it 27-yards for a touchdown to increase the Pirate lead to 21-0.
The Bears were able to get their first score at the 7:40 mark in the second quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked to make the score 21-6.
Pierce County was able to cut further into the Pirate lead later in the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown run and were able to add the two-point conversion to make the score 21-14.
The score remained the same until 9:29 remaining in the third quarter as Pirate Vernon Dasher scored on an eight-yard touchdown run increasing the Pirate lead to 28-14.
Pirate defender Samuel Ryan was able to intercept a Pierce County pass in the end zone for the Pirates next score increasing their lead to 35-14 with 3:04 left in the third quarter.
Jaramillo added a 41-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to put the Pirates ahead 38-14.
Pierce County was the last to score on a short touchdown run to make the final score 38-20.
