Don Smiley, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013. Don was born Dec. 26, 1938 in Appling County to the late Robert Bryant Smiley and the late Bonnie Beach Smiley. He was a member of Friendship Congregational Christian Church. Smiley was a veteran of the United States Army and served four years in the National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Smiley of Baxley; one daughter and son-in-law, Christa and Kenny Kirksey of Baxley; one son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Krystal Smiley of Baxley; three brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Sandy Pickren, Roger and Carolyn Smiley, all of Baxley and Ashley and Danise Smiley of Hazlehurst; seven grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 23 from Friendship Congregational Christian Church with the Reverends Barry Teutsch and David Griffin officiating. Interment followed in Baxley Graveyard.
Active pallbearers were Mike Hutto, Tony Herrington, Landry Tillman, Truett Crummey, David Griffin, Clint Herrington, K C Griffin, Shane Crummey, Kelby Crummey, Randall Griffin, Rodney Smiley and Wayne Herrington.
Honorary pallbearers were Smiley’s Garage and Friendship Church Softball teams coached by Don Smiley, Friendship Church Men Sunday School Class, Alisha Jones, Rick Houston, Eddie Miles, Tim Stone, Brad Park, Ricky Weaver, Terry Turner, Stacy Carter, Dr. Lance Hendrix and staff, Southern Care Hospice employees, Dr. Duane Moores and staff, Dr. Timothy Jamieson and staff, Dr. Michael Sharkey and staff and all friends in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Bruce Harris, Michelle Brown, Aaron Brown, Regina Davis, Friendship Choir and a tape played in memory of Gene Sorrell.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
