During the Appling County Board of Commissioners regularly scheduled meeting held on Tuesday, January 18 the Commissioners approved the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST, resolution.
The proposed $18 million SPLOST would take affect on January 1, 2012 if approved by voters in a referendum to voted on in March. The commissioners unanimously approved the resolution
The SPLOST resolution will be separated into three tiers. The majority of the funds would go towards improving roads, streets and bridges with the county receiving $8,000,000.00 and the City of Baxley receiving $3,000,00.00.
Other projects include the Appling County Jail $2,500,000, Concerted Services/Head Start $1,250,000, Appling Hospital Authority $1,750,000, Appling County Library $150,000, Appling County Development Authority $1,000,000 and the Appling County Recreation Department $350,000.

Nancy Gardner presented information to the commissioners about the need of a recycling program in Appling County. Gardner submitted a signed recommendation to County Manager Lee Lewis and Commissioner Chairman Lewis Parker. Lewis informed Gardner that the commissioners have previously gathered information about possible recycling programs based on surrounding counties and the commissioners would continue to look into a recycling program for the future.
The commissioners approved their annual sponsorship of the Baxley Tree Fest for the amount of $1,000.00. Lewis stated that the money was budgeted and just needed to be approved. The sponsorship was approved unanimously.
