The report states that the responding officer along with other officers were dispatched to Water Works Park in reference to a suspicious person. According to Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey a person had called 911 to report the suspicious person at the park just prior to the attack. Upon arrival the officers found the woman lying in the sand on the shoulder of the road on the southwest corner of the park near the railroad tracks. The victim was checked out by Appling Emergency Medical Service personnel, taken by personal vehicle to Appling HealthCare for treatment of injuries received from the attack and released.
The victim told officers that she arrived at the park at approximately 8:00 p.m. and stated that while she was walking (at around 8:30 p.m.) she observed a tall, thin, and light-skinned black male wearing a gray tank top and black shorts sitting on a bench in the park. As she turned a corner in the park the male came from behind her and struck her in the head knocking her sunglasses off. The victim said that she fell on the ground and the offender took another swing at her, but missed. She then told police that she was able to get away from the offender for a short distance as he was yelling “come go with me”. The offender then caught back up with the victim and placed his arms around her neck and started chocking the victim until she started having trouble breathing. The victim also reported that the offender dragged her across the ground and continued hitting her in the head.
The victim reported that finally the offender ran from the scene on foot headed southwest in the direction of Bay Street. Baxley Police called a K-9 Unit from Reidsville, but were unable to locate the offender.
The case is still under investigation by the Baxley Police. Chief James Godfrey asks that if anyone has information about the attack, to please contact the Baxley Police Department at 912-367-8305 or the Appling County Sheriff’s Office at 912-367-8120.
