Dr. John Greene Herring, Jr., a resident of Thomasville, NC, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Piedmont Crossing Retirement Community. Dr. John Greene Herring, Jr. (Jack) was born in Tifton on July 31, 1915 to Ruby Leigh Hewitt Herring and Editor John Greene Herring, Sr. He completed his public school education at Tifton High School in 1933. He attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, finishing in 1935. He next attended the University of Georgia College of Agriculture in Athens, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture in 1937. In 1940 he married Esther Ruth Wood of Baxley. They had two children, Doris Esther Herring Russell of Whispering Pines, NC and John Greene Herring, III of Guatemala.
During World War II Jack Herring served in the 20th M.R.U. of the 7th Army Headquarters. When discharged he returned to the University of Georgia and pursued a degree in Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1950. Since that date he practiced large and small animal medicine in Thomasville, NC until retiring in 1980.
He is a life member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association and the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, member of the N.C. Academy of Small Animal Medicine, member and past president of Thomasville Lions club, member and past director of Thomasville Chamber of Commerce, member of Memorial United Methodist Church and Administrative Board, past superintendent of Sunday School Board, past president of R.L. Pope Bible Class and past president of Methodist Men?s Club.
His wife, Ruth Herring, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
Surviving are two brothers, Paul Herring of Fort Myers, Florida and Tim Herring of Melbourne, Florida. Also surviving are daughter, Doris Esther Herring Russell and her husband Bill Russell of Whispering Pines, NC; son, John Greene Herring, III and wife Sybil Francis of Guatemala. His grandchildren are Russ Russell and his wife Kristi of Concord, NC and Chelsea Russell Winicki and her husband Christian of Jacksonville and his great-grandchildren, Britain, Emory, and Kinley Russell of Concord, NC and Kiely Winicki of Jacksonville.
A funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8 in the Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peggy Finch officiating. Interment followed in the Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family received friends on that Friday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville, NC.
