I won’t name the county from which the rude girls hailed, because their behavior soon became a mere blip on my daughter’s weekend, thanks to the hospitality of Appling County band parent, Kim Boyette, and the girls from the Appling County Pirate Band.
After hearing of how my daughter was treated, the girls from Appling County were quick to extend an invitation for her to join them in the cabin they shared with Berrien County. Both sets of students welcomed my child graciously, including her in everything they did, from playing games, to discussing “anything under the sun” as teenage girls are known to do. My child went from lamenting, “I want to go home” to declaring she couldn’t wait to see her new friends again at the next District 8 event.
Mrs. Boyette and these students give testimony to the camaraderie shared between our area band programs – and the standards to which the Appling County band program holds its students. Without them, my child’s first experience at Epworth would have held bitter memories, and she would have likely been discouraged from participating in the event again next year.
As a former band student and an active band mom, I know your band program is only as good as the foundation on which its built, and Appling County has one of the best.
Thank you for helping turn what could have been a terrible experience into one of these best she’s ever had.
