Leona Byrd Carter, 86, of Bristol, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at her residence after an extended illness. The Appling County native was a member of the Antioch Congregational Christian Church in Bristol, where she served in many capacities, was an Adult Sunday-School Teacher for many years, and was a lifelong farmer. She was a retired director of Autumn Place Service Center in Jesup, former member of the Dogwood Garden Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her husband: Carl Russell Carter, Sr., brothers: G. W. Byrd, Rupert Byrd, Devon Byrd, John Byrd, and a sister: Essie Mae Byrd Barnes.
Survivors include three daughters: Bonnie C. (Milton) Burkhalter of Jesup, Brenda (C. D. “Pete”) Mann of Surrency, Mary C. (Robert) Johnson of Bristol, a son: Carl Russell Carter, Jr. of Bristol, a brother and sister-in-law: Tom (Faye Nell) Byrd of Stockbridge, GA, 13 Grandchildren: Russ Martin, Gary Burkhalter, Nanette Fussell, Tammy Miles, Cliff Mann, Jennifer Jansen, Jeffery Langlois, Sarah Carter, Russell Carter, III, Charissa Fitch, Amber Thornton, Bryan Johnson, and Shea Johnson, 21 Great-grandchildren, one Great-great-grandchild, several special nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were at 12:00 noon on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at the Antioch Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. Carlton Rowell and the Rev. Fred Lockwood officiating. Interment followed in the Antioch Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were grandsons: Russ Martin, Cliff Mann, Jeffery Langlois, Russell Carter, III, Brannon Fitch, Josh Watts, Rufus Harris, and Steve Harris.
Honorary pallbearers were: Gail Darsey, Sandra Tyre, Dr. Lance Hendrix and members of Antioch Congregational Christian Church.
Visitation was held between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, Sunday at the church prior to services.
The Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup, was in charge of the arrangements.
