Maretha Sharpe Howard (aka Chank, Retha, G.G., Jelly Bean), died January 16, 2013. Ms. Howard was born in Appling County on Oct. 2, 1942 to the late Nathaniel Sharpe and the late Rosa B. Sharpe. She attended Appling County Consolidated High School. Early in life she joined First Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in many ways. The auxiliaries she served were as follows: Amos Henry Gospel Chorus, Sunday school and Bible study (regularly), Mission Dept. (Sick Committee), Kitchen Committee, supported the custodial services, Captain of the Church Family Pyramid Committee, and Treasurer of Singles Committee. She assisted with the Youth Department and faithfully with the Usher Ministry.
Maretha was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Nell James and Annie Lee Cooper.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and godmother.
Survivors include two daughters, Rosa M. Jordan of Jacksonville, FL and Alicia D. (Terry) Williams, Sr. of Baxley; four sons, Michael A. (Barbara) Howard, Sr. of Hazlehurst, Timothy L. Howard, Sr. of Douglas, Billy G. (Sandra) Howard, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL and Gregory L. (Redina) Howard, Sr. of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, Percell Sharpe and David Sailem of Baxley; three sister, Georgia A. (Cleveland) Carter, Wanda (Grady) Norwood, both of Baxley and JoElla (Martin) Ashley of Orlando, FL; nineteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; a special niece, Deondra Carter; two godsons, Blake and Sammie McMorris and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22 from First Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Baxley with the Rev. Moses Eason presiding and the Rev. Joe Moore, Sr., pastor, officiating. Interment followed in church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were grandsons: Brian Thomas, Michael Howard, Jr., Jerome Jordan, Tyler Carter, Brandon Jordan (nephew), Marquis Drinks, Justin Robinson, Sterlon Turner and Curtis Jordan, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were Michael Sharpe, Mr. and Mrs. David Carter, Jr. and ACCHS Class of 1960.
Musical selections were rendered by Tammy Richburg and Greater Faith Temple Choir.
Arrangements were under the direction of Baxley Funeral Home.
