Appling County Schools staff members returned to the district on January 7. Superintendent Scarlett Copeland reported a memorial service had been planned at the Fine Arts Center for all staff members upon return in order to memorialize the children and staff members in Newtown, CT who lost their lives, to memorialize two of our own students who passed away this year, to bring words of thanks to our students and staff in Appling County, and to speak positive words for the 2013 school year. The school district was appreciative of the following guest who assisted with the memorial service: Rita Lightsey, Rick Brown, Fred Anderson, Terrance Gibson, Lamar Lee, and Elaine Edwards.
Overall, this event promoted a great start in the district for the 2013 school year stated the superintendent. Numerous staff members also indicated this was an outstanding program and much needed to begin our 2013 start.
Afterwards, the Superintendent Copeland met with all Principals, Assistant Principals, and the District Safety Team in order to begin reviewing recommendations from GEMA concerning the school system’s emergency plans. Future dates were set for additional meetings for safety purposes.
School Principals conducted staff meetings in their respective schools and other meetings were held throughout the district for the remainder of the day. An iPad training was offered to interested staff members in order to increase knowledge about this device and its use with students in the classroom.
Students returned on January 8 to begin the second semester of the school year. The memorial event presented to the staff on January 7 was also shared with students on Tuesday. Afterwards, they were engaged in learning as teachers and paraprofessionals implemented the common core standards. These are the same standards that are being implemented across the nation and will assist with preparing our students for college or a career. Overall, administrators, staff members, and students alike are looking forward to a great remainder of the 2013 schools year.
