The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 5 at the Courthouse Annex at 5:30 p.m. During the meeting the Commissioners opened sealed bids on an addition to the Highway 144 Fire Station. The low bidder from the five submitted was given by Leggett Steel Buildings for the amount of $13,850.00 with the second lowest bid of $22,861.00 being submitted by Rebco Construction. The commissioners unanimously approved a motion to accept the best and lowest bid from Leggett Steel Buildings.

Tammy Baucom came before the commissioners with a request to run a water line under a county maintained road. The proposed water line would be three feet deep with a protective sleeve around the pipe to prevent damage and leakage. County Manager Lee Lewis stated that the commissioners would study the issue and get back to Baucom at a later time.
The commissioners heard information about the purchase of six transmitting or scanner radios to be used by the commissioners to monitor what is happening in the county. The radios would have the capability to be used to speak to county employees, but Lewis advised them to be used for information purposes only. Commissioners Theodore Wilkerson, Ronnie Rentz and Sarah Boatright voted to include the radios in the 2012 budget with commissioners Charlie Leggett and Jasper Tomberlin voting against the motion. The commissioners received an estimate for two options on the radios one costing $2,145.00 and the second option at a cost of $2,910.00.
The commissioners made a motion to change the title of the Recreation Director to Athletic Director. The motion was made by Wilkerson, with a second by Leggett, and all voting in favor of the motion.
Lewis read a proclamation from the District Attorney’s office declaring April 10 through April 16 as “Crime Victims’ Rights Week.” The commissioners unanimously approved a motion to accept the proclamation.

I'm just a tax paying citizen - just wondering - how in the world can 2 bids (fire station)be so far different in amounts from each other. Is the Leggett Steel the one in same as the Leggett on the board? Seems this could be a Conflict of Interest? I see a lot of Change Orders coming with the low bid!! Interesting to say the least!!
