New sales tax rate goes to eight cent
Effective January 1, Appling County’s new sales tax rate is eight cent per dollar on taxable goods. The new rate will now include the Transportation Sales Tax (one cent per dollar), a 10-year sales tax.
Appling’s sales tax rate is made up of four cent going to the state, one cent going to a Local Option Sales Tax, one cent toward a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, one cent going to an Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and the new transportation tax that voters approved of in the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Regional Commission Area in 2012. The new tax will provide for $300 million in road improvement projects in the area. The Heart of Georgia Altamaha area consists of Appling, Wayne, Jeff Davis, Telfair, Dodge, Wilcox, Bleckley, Laurens, Wheeler, Montgomery, Toombs, Tattnall, Evans, Candler, Treutlen, Emanuel and Johnson Counties.
Baxley, Surrency and Appling County will be able to complete a total of 53 projects over the next 10 years that equate to roughly $7.3 million in road improvements. In addition, the county will receive $5,000,000.00 to go toward the Altamaha River Bridge replacement on U.S. Highway 1 North. The total overall expected cost to replace this bridge is approximately $30 million. And finally, the community will receive another approximate $7,000,000.00 to use at its discretion. The total monetary gain for the community should be roughly $19.3 million over the next ten years from the transportation tax.
Only three of the 12 regional commission areas in the state approved the TSPLOST referendum in July 2012. The three regional commission areas include Region 9 – Heart of Georgia Altamaha, Region 8 – River Valley (west of Heart of Georgia), and Region 7 - Central Savannah River (northeast of Heart of Georgia). The Transportation Sales Tax did pass in Appling County with 2,586 voting in favor of the tax and 2,272 voting against the tax. The tax also passed in the entire Heart of Georgia area by a vote of 28,677 in favor and 26,782 opposed.

Oh, that's real smart. We're in the middle of another economic depression and the tax rates go up. That's always governments answer to the question that wasn't asked. I'll just make it a point to NOT make any purchases in Appling county.
