Old business
Following considerations, the city council approved the first reading of an ordinance annexing property owned by Roy Bass, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and First Avenue for establishing a Business (B-2) zone, in voting district 5.
City manager’s report
Manager Jeff Baxley stated that he is going to get with City Attorney Alex Johnson to prepare a letter to send out with business license renewals advising business owners they will have to come to City Hall to receive their license and provide identification. Business owners renewing a business license are required to come in and present an ID as now it is required by a new state mandate.
He reported that the street sweeper has been repaired.
The manager stated he has received several comments about how good the downtown area is looking. He also stated that the City Park, City Hall and the Public Works Department were looking really good with the Christmas decorations. He thanked the Public Works Department and the prison detail for the good work they have been doing.
The manager announced that there would be Christmas in the Park services held at the Water Works Park next Wednesday night (Dec. 5) and the lighting of the tree would be at 6:00 p.m.
He reported that the Home Serve Company who provides insurance for homeowners in case of water damage on their private property is working in this area. This has nothing to do with the city; this is an offer from a private company for property owners to purchase insurance.
Baxley read a thank you note from Braxton McNeil to the mayor and council for helping to provide the book Four Seasons for Little People to the first graders at the schools. The city and the Appling County Commissioners work together on this project.
The manager stated that the city has a list of customers who are receiving water/sewer discounts if anyone wants to look over the list.
