On Monday, March 14, thirty-one 4-H and FFA members participated in the 2011 edition of the annual market hog show, sponsored by the Appling County Stockman’s Association. The judge for this year’s show was Timmy White of Coffee County.
Tyler Williams took top honors with her 254-pound gilt being named Grand Champion. Reserve Champion honors went to Autumn Bailey for her 239-pound gilt.
The six class winners and the pigs’ weights were: Class 1 - Logan Lastinger, 221 lbs.; Class 2 - Autumn Bailey, 239 lbs.; Class 3 - Corissa Bass, 249 lbs.; Class 4 - Tyler Williams, 254 lbs. and Class 5 - Lauren Graham, 280 lbs.
Southeastern Cotton Gin presented the Showmanship winners with a plaque and a $100.00 savings bonds for their efforts. This year they had so many 1st Year Exhibitors, they divided the group into two classes. The two first place winners for the 1st Year Exhibitor Showmanship Classes were one by Harley Lightsey and Morgan Padgett. Junior Division was won by Tanner Folsom. Jarrett Williams was first in the Intermediate Division and Tyler Williams one the Senior Division.
Exhibitors were encouraged to submit record books to show their record keeping methods. The Stockman’s Association offered prize money for the top record books in each division. The winners for best records were 1st Year Exhibitor - first place, C.D. Williams, second place, Noah Clegg and third place, Geavonna Starr. Junior Division winners were first place, Jarrett Williams, second place, Logan Jacobs, and third place, Kadie Graham. The Intermediate Division winner was first place, Lauren Graham. In the Senior Division, Tyler Williams placed first and Haley White placed second.
