At the beginning of the meeting Mayor Steve Rigdon introduced Ethan Hutchinson. Ethan is seven years old and attends Altamaha Elementary School. His parents are Shawn and Misty Hutchinson. Ethan sung for the council before Mayor Pro Tem Hall gave the invocation.
Mayor Rigdon proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month for the City of Baxley.
New business
The council reviewed a Joint Resolution in Support of Quality Public Education. Following discussion the city council voted unanimously to execute the joint resolution in support of quality public education. Manager Jeff Baxley explained that this is a joint resolution and the Appling County Commission and Appling County Board of Education would also be considering the joint resolution for approval.
Old business
Council members approved a first reading for an ordinance amending the zoning ordinance of the City of Baxley so as to permit churches in business districts, protect business establishments and for other purposes.
The council voted unanimously to approve a first reading for an ordinance annexing the property owned by Mattie Fedrick, located at 1462 Jekyll Road, for the establishing of a Business/Residential (BR-1) zone.
Manager Baxley asked the mayor and city council about raising the price of cemetery lots from the current $200.00 per lot for inside city residents to $225.00. The manager further stated this would help with the cost of recording the deed and any other upkeep relating to the cemetery. After discussion, Hall made a motion to increase the price of cemetery plots from $200.00 per lot to $300.00 per lot for inside city residents and increase from $400.00 to $600.00 per lot for outside city residents, also if the city buys back any lots the conditions would be to buy back at the original purchase price.
City manager’s report
The manager announced that he and David Gore would be going to Rebel Auction tomorrow to look at a bucket truck that can be used as a bucket truck and also to pull the motor grader to work sites. There are six trucks on the lot, which will be auctioned off on Thursday and they are hoping to find one at a good price.
He asked everyone when they get a chance to ride out and look at the airport terminal building. He stated it looks incredible and is something to be very proud of.
Manager Baxley stated the Cook Out on the Corner event would be held next Thursday, Oct. 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Water Works Park. This event features activities for children and free hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone.
Following a public hearing the council went into a closed session to discuss potential litigation. No action was taken following the closed session.
