The Pilot Club of Baxley held their installation of officers for the coming year 2012-2013 at a local restaurant recently. The former Lt. Governor for the Southeast Region, Joyce Tillman, installed the following officers: Stephanie Mincey, President; Janie Carter, President-elect; Debi Hendrix, Treasurer; Misty Baxley, Claretha Lewis, Beth Sharpe and Joyce Tillman as Directors.
The Pilot Mission is to serve by furthering Pilot Internationals humanitarian efforts through charitable, educational, and research programs in communities throughout the world. The Pilots are committed to uphold “the Code of Ethics” purpose and mission of Pilot International by reflecting the common cause of friendship and service.
One of the first projects for the new year was preparing “Welcome Survival Bags” for the new teachers of the Appling County Board of Education. The plans of work for the coming year for the Pilots indicate it will be an active and busy year.
A monetary gift has been given for a cancer patient twice for the patient’s transportation to and from treatment. The club donates money every quarter to the Pavilion for hairdos for the residents. Pilots furnish candy at different times of the year for their parties. They assist with the Easter and Christmas parties for the residents. They, too sponsor several residents at Christmas time.
The club participates in many educational activities such as Special Olympics, monetary gifts for the Science Fair awards, they recognize the STAR Student and STAR Teacher, the Up-Rising STAR Student from the eighth grade, and the county Spelling Bee winner. Certificates are presented to students in all areas of various contests. The Pilot Club sponsors several writing contests throughout the year with monetary awards to the winners and three scholarships are given to seniors on Honor’s Night.
During the holiday seasons, food baskets are prepared for needy families in the community. Toys are furnished to certain organizations at Christmas to help provide for underprivileged children and children at the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home.
A camouflage afghan will be raffled off for one of their fundraising projects. Pilots will be selling tickets on the afghan to be given away in October. Tickets will be $2.00 for one or $5.00 for three tickets.
The main fundraising project is the annual Golf Tournament to be held at the “Twisted Pines Golf Course” in Hazlehurst Georgia on October 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A four-man team can play for $200.00.
