The Appling County Food Bank will soon be recognizing ten (10) years of ministry in Appling County. The Food Bank is able to provide food at no cost to low income families through the support of United Way, a Federal Emergency Grant, area churches and private donations. The food bank participates in the “Feeding America” program through America’s Second Harvest. Local businesses also participate in this “Feeding America,” namely: Harvey’s, Pizza Hut and Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart in Baxley donated over 71,000 pounds of perishable food this past year.
The food bank in the past fiscal year gave to the families in Appling County 218,260 pounds of food with no charge to the recipient. The food bank spent $35,506 in providing food. We are very thankful for the support of Appling County citizens for their financial support.
One of the most important elements of the food bank has been the volunteers. We have approximately 32 volunteers that serve on a continual basis; without them, we would not be able to open our doors. The ministry of the food bank is dependent on these dedicated, unselfish, caring people to help families in their time of crisis.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, seven volunteers at the food bank gave to 33 families; 2,211 pounds of food in four (4) hours. That was an average of 67 pounds of food every seven and half minutes. We are thankful for all our volunteers.
The food bank is located at 82 Barnes Street in the old elementary school.
The times of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. We also will be receiving applications for volunteers during that time. Why not volunteer and make a difference, today! The phone number is 912-366-3663.
