The Appling County Pirates (3-0-1 overall, 1-0 Region 1-AAA) traveled to Savannah to face the Johnson Atom Smashers (0-4, 0-1) on Thursday, September 20 in the Region opener for both teams. The Pirates were able to hold off the Atom Smashers to win 28-21.
The Pirates will have Recreation Night as they host the Savannah Blue Jackets (1-3, 0-1) this Friday, September 28 with the game scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Jackets lost to Tattnall County (2-2, 1-0) 6-35 last week.
Scoring Recap
The first points of the game came as an Atom Smashers’ defender tackled a Pirate runner in the end-zone for a safety to make the score 0-2 with 2:16 left in the first quarter.
The Pirates scored their first points on an eight-yard touchdown run by Justin Moore. Israel Jaramillo added the extra point to make the score 7-2 with 8:59 left in the second quarter.
Pirate quarterback Vernon Dasher scored on a four-yard run to make the score, with the extra point by Jaramillo, 14-2 with 6:36 left in the second quarter. The drive was set up by an interception by Connor Wilkerson.
The Pirates added a 96-yard touchdown run by Jordan Vann to make the lead 21-2 with 3:39 left in the second quarter.
The Atom Smashers added the next score on a one-yard run but the two-point conversion was no good to make the score 21-8 with 7:04 left in the third quarter.
The next score would come on an eight-yard touchdown run by the Atom Smashers. The extra point attempt was converted to make the score 21-15 with 10:26 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Atom Smashers tied the score at 21-21 on a four-yard touchdown run with 7:19 left in the fourth quarter.
The final score of the game was a one-yard touchdown run by Moore to make the final score, with the extra point, 28-21.

Leading rushers were Jordan Vann 101 yards on four carries one touchdown, Justin Moore 73 yards on 14 carries two touchdowns, Jason Dhaliwal 32 yards on five carries, Dasha Carter 30 yards on four carries, Vernon Dasher 18 yards on 14 carries and one touchdown.
Leading receivers were Ronald Handsom 36 yards on two catches, Justin Moore 20 yards on one catch, Trey Newkirk 17 yards on two catches, Conner Wilkerson five yards on one catch.
Quarterbacks were Vernon Dasher, four completions on eight attempts for 61 yards, and Jason Dhaliwal, three completions on five attempts for five yards.
