Fires occur throughout county and area
Last Thursday Baxley and Appling County fire personnel had their hands full with multiple brush fires throughout the county. The largest of the local fires occurred in the K’ville area in southern Appling. Local firemen did an outstanding job getting the fires under control quickly. Shown above are smoldering stumps in southern Appling, and in the bottom photo, firemen are barely recognizable through the dense smoke.
Other fires in the area, which started on Thursday, included a fire in southern Bacon County, near the Ware County line. To date this fire has consumed 22,246 acres and, as of yesterday was nearly contained. A fire in Clinch County burned 12,484 acres and in Long County a fire burned 4,035 acres.
The Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) has restricted outdoor burn permits in the Satilla and Ogeechee Districts (a district map can be found at http://www.gatrees.org/AboutUs/documents/GFCDistrictMap2011.pdf) until further notice. Burn permits will be issued for all other districts as conditions allow.
Residents in the southeastern portion of the state should expect to continue to see smoke for the coming weeks. The GFC urges motorists to use extreme caution when driving through dense smoke due to limited visibility. For more information visit GaTrees.org.
