State Dept. personnel visit Appling Schools
On August 22, Hubert Bennett from the State Department of Education was invited to come to Appling County School System to share information on our State Longitudinal Data System. Joella Stalvey introduced Bennett to the afternoon session and he formerly conducted a session at the high school. This was no charge to the district and Superintendent Scarlett Copeland commended him for visiting Appling County and providing important updates on this data system. The superintendent also noted that the district is very data driven and this will give the system additional tools to utilize for student success. Principals, test coordinators, teachers, and program directors were all on hand to participate in this session.
The Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS) application contains enrollment, attendance, assessment, and course information for Georgia’s PK-12 public school students. The application is designed to help districts, schools, and teachers make data-driven decisions to improve student learning, as well as facilitate research to increase student achievement and close achievement gaps. The SLDS has been updated reported Bennett and information is uploaded much faster than before. This allows the district, each school, and every teacher to see their information concerning statewide test in a timely manner. Bennett indicated the state would be adding other areas to the SLDS that would be tailored to the district needs.
After exploring this option, Superintendent Copeland discussed having the Curriculum Benchmark System (CUBS) and Dibels added to the district’s data. Bennett indicated this could be done to meet the needs of the system. All personnel who participated agreed this would be great for Appling School System. Overall, participants were excited about redelivering this information to their respective schools.
