On Monday morning parents and students arrived at schools to find an increased presence of safety measures and law enforcement, especially at Appling County High School where students were checked as they entered the school.
Late Monday afternoon the Appling County Board of Education released the following statement:
“A school search was conducted today at the Appling County High School (ACHS) with the assistance of the Baxley Police Department, Appling County Sheriff’s Department, Georgia State Patrol and Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The precautions taken by the school system today were in response to a potential threat of weapons being brought to ACHS.
ACHS was placed on “soft lockdown”, which restricted the movement of students in the building. Each student’s belongings were searched as they entered the school. All outside doors entering the building were locked except the main doors and personnel were placed throughout the school hallways.
For safety purposes, all other schools were placed on “safety alert” which does not allow students to go outside during the day for recess or physical education and an increase in safety measures were taken inside the schools.
Due to the swift action taken by staff and all law enforcement, the search yielded no violations of the Student Code of Conduct and the students were able to resume their class schedules.”
The News-Banner spoke with Baxley Chief of Police James Godfrey late Monday afternoon and he confirmed that police officers and other law enforcement agencies are working hard to identify the person responsible for the threat made toward the school system. Godfrey asks that if anyone has information about this incident to please contact the Baxley Police Department at 912-367-8305.
