Nearly 70 tons… we are making a difference
Last April this newspaper started a paper recycling program through SP Recycling at our office. At the same time, SP Recycling entered into a partnership with the Appling County School System, the City of Baxley and the Appling County Commissioners to provide recycling containers at schools and various public locations within the community.
It is projected that by the end of 2012 nearly 70 tons of paper will have been recycled in Appling County. What is the cost of this service to the community? Nothing! In fact, SP Recycling has paid the school system approximately $1,150.00 for nearly 29 tons of paper collected at school collection bins, and the county and city have received approximately $500.00 for 13 tons of paper collected at public bins.
Where does this paper go once it leaves our community? It goes to Dublin to SP Newsprint where the paper/fiber is treated, cleaned and recycled into newsprint for publishers around the world, including this newspaper. That’s right this article and page is printed on recycled newsprint from Dublin and could come from a piece of paper, magazine or newspaper that you put in one of the community recycling bins.
It’s truly mind-blowing to know that, as a community, we have kept 70 tons of material from being buried in a landfill in the area. Keep up the good work Appling County and SP Recycling. You are making a difference.
I encourage our citizens and county and city officials to continue to look for other recycling programs for our community. As stated above, they do work.

I'm also very glad to hear that the recycling programs implemented are keeping so much waste from our landfills! I would like to encourage everyone in our community to petition for recycling centers that accommodate recycling plastic and glass, as well. We recycled all the products that were able to be recycled for years, but we had to drive to Jesup to find a drop-off to take these materials. The emissions from our vehicles may have offset the good we were doing in keeping so much waste out of our trash cans, but the amount kept out was astounding; most weeks, our trash can was only one-quarter full! I hope our county and surrounding counties can embrace the idea of recycling soon...it certainly is an easy way to make a small difference!

You are so right. After moving here from Statesboro, where recycling centers can be found in every corner of town, my wife and I have noticed a large difference in the amount of reuseable stuff we simply have to throw away. When saying a phrase like ''throw away'' one doesn't always realize the problem. The problem is: all these metal cans, plastic bottles & glass containers we purchase are being placed beneath the ground where they will remain for hundreds of years. Meanwhile many more are being made daily to make up for all these ''hidden'' items. Lets get these things back into circulation. Because outta site & outta mind does not mean out of existence.

Some people that live in Baxley have their head in the dirt maybe they might see the stuff just thrown away. Until you live where recycling works you just don't realize what you are putting in the ground for future generations to live with. All Baxley people care about a few months ago was the landfills!! Your trash is being taken to someone elses place!! Think about it!
