Chief James Godfrey reports that the following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past few days.
July 1 at approx. 12:34, met with the resident at a Simmons Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had entered three vehicles on his property and removed his wallet from one of the vehicles. The wallet contained an undetermined amount of currency along with personal papers and other items.
July 2 at approx. 5:30 a.m., met with the resident at a Lackawanna Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had broken into his home and removed a Springfield Arms Mill Spec .45-cal pistol, a Bond Arms Snake Slayer .410-cal pistol, and a jar that had some currency in it.
July 2 at approx. 7:30 p.m., met with a complainant at Appling County High School walking track in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that she was walking and when she returned to her vehicle, she discovered that her wallet missing was from under the seat. The wallet contained personal papers and other cards, pictures and papers.
July 6 at approx. 9:30 p.m., met with a resident at a South Main Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that he had given a subject a ride and that the subject later drove off in his truck. A lookout was posted to other units and surrounding counties for the truck, a maroon in color, 1990 Nissan pickup, along with the driver, who was later identified as James Andrew King, 34, of Baxley. On July 8 the truck was recovered in Vidalia abandoned at a local motel. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of James Andrew King on charges of theft by taking motor vehicle in connection with this incident.
July 8 at approx. 8:51 a.m., answered a call to a 1st Street address in reference to the resident being unresponsive. On arrival the officers met with a relative and the EMS unit. The relative told officers that she noticed the resident to be unresponsive and was cold to the touch, so she called 911 for assistance. The coroner was notified and on his arrival and investigation discovered that Jerry Wayne Thompson, 66, of Baxley, had died from natural causes.
July 10 at approx. 3:45 p.m., met with a complainant at Max Deen Memorial Park in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had stolen her daughter’s I-Pad while she was swimming at the pool. The stolen I-pad has been entered on the GCIC computer system as stolen.
July 12 at approx. 3:57 a.m., responded to a fight in progress call at a Tippins Street address. On arrival officers observed a subject run behind the residence. The complainant told officers that there was a domestic argument that had turned physical with the offender hitting his grandmother and cussing at her. The complainant told officers she tried to break up the disturbance when she felt a sharp pain in her right thigh area, and then the offender fled on foot. The complainant told officers that she thought the offender had stabbed her with a knife. The EMS unit was called to the scene where the victim was transferred to the Appling Healthcare System for her injuries and was later released. After a search of the area for the offender, John David Kersey, Jr., 20, of Baxley, was taken into custody without further incident. Kersey is in custody on charges of one count each of simple battery and aggravated assault under the family violence act.
July 12 at approx. 5:29 p.m., met with a resident at a Floyd Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had broken into the residence and rummaged through several drawers and closets; nothing was reported missing at report time.
July 13 at approx. 5:58 p.m., met with the resident at a NFL Drive address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had come into his yard and removed a 1989 Chevy Blazer, which was red and black in color. The resident told officers that they had to tow it off, because the blazer didn’t have a motor in it.
July 16 at approx. 11:47 a.m., met with a complainant at the Appling Co. High School. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had stolen his son’s cell phone from his locker at school, while he was at football practice.
