John Raford “J.R.” Harper, 88, died Thursday, March 10, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Son of the late Pearlie Harper and the late Mable Mayers Harper was born in Bacon County on July 18, 1922 and had resided in Baxley for most of his life. He was the retired owner of Western Auto in Baxley, which he owned and operated, along with his wife, Lorene Harper, for 41 years. J. R was a charter member of Miles Chapel Baptist Church and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion and the Holmesville Lodge #195 F&AM. Mr. Harper was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lorene Harper.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley (Robert) Davis of Baxley and Faye (Weyman) Allen of Baxley; one son, Johnny (Linda) Harper of Baxley; two sisters, Cassie Haddock and Myra Swinson both of Fernandina Beach, FL; two brothers, Virgil Harper of Fernandina Beach, FL and Carroll Harper of Stockbridge; grandchildren: Nan Marie Pedrick, Michele McGibony, Brad Harper and Alan Harper; great-grandchildren, Brandi Durham, Cody Durham, Blaine Harper, Sage Harper, Halee Harper and Skylar McGibony; one great-great-grandchild, Maddi Brannen; caregivers, Tammy Johns, Lynn Nails and Liz Sailem and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 13 at Miles Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Daniels and the Rev. Ron Ross officiating. Interment followed in Miles Chapel Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Larry Brewer, Charles Edwards, Larry Haddock, Curtis Harper, Keith Edwards, Randall Odum, Larry Odum and Gene Erdman.
Honorary pallbearers were all friends in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Morgan Harper, Floyd Hunter and David Williams.
Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.
