The Rev. David Lee Rooks died Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at his home. Mr. Rooks was born on Sept. 9, 1918 in Chatham County. He was the second of 12 children born to the late Althia and Henrietta Rooks.
He completed his educational training at Dorchester Academy in Chatham County and Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta. His pastoral experiences began in 1941 and continued for 60 years. Rev. Rooks served congregations in Folkston, St. Mary’s, Woodbine, Savannah, Metter, Sylvania, Waycross, Blackshear, Jesup, and for 17 years pastored his home church, Harper Chapel in Baxley. He was well known throughout the South Georgia United Methodist Church Conference, and distinguished himself as a soul-stirring preacher and revivalist.

He was married to the late Claudia Fulmore Rooks for 47 years and together they had six children. The Rev. Rooks served as Chaplin for the Appling County Hospital Authority and was a member of the Appling County Department of Children and Family Services.
In 2005, the Rev. Rooks married the former Willa Mae Harris.
Very seldom would a person attend a service officiated by the Rev. Rooks and not hear him line the hymn, “ A Charge to Keep I Have,” or quote the scripture, John 3:16. One of his final statements in this life was, “I know that God will be with me.”
Survivors include his wife of six years, Willa Mae Rooks; five children, Diane (Charles), David (Linda), Charles, LaVera and LaNera (H.J.) and one foster son, Willie; step-children, Steve (Felicia), Wayne, Lisa (Jerome), and Stephanie; three sisters, Evelyn (Dea. Isaiah) Isom, Alretta Wooten and Zelene (Rev. Columbus) Burns; two brothers, Roland (Annie Bea) Rooks and Norman (JoAnn) Rooks; fourteen grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; eight sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 13 at Harper Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Columbus Burns presiding. A word of comfort was given by Pastor Vicki Scott. Interment followed in Baxley Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Shawn Rooks, Kevin James, Willie Banks, DaRon Rooks, Ronald Rooks, Willie Crawford, Jr. and Michael Miller.
Honorary pallbearers were Thirkield Rooks Jr., Oliver Hall, Eddie James Hall, Douglas Rooks, Carzell Rooks, Jr. and Kenneth Rooks.
Musical selections were rendered by Tony Tillman and the choir.
Arrangements were under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.
