The Pirates would score three in the first, one in the second and third respectively and six in the fourth. However the Gators would have an answer for the outburst. They scored one in the first, two in he third and five in the fourth. The score after four innings was 11-8 Pirates. The Pirates would score three more times in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 14-8 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Gators would not go away quietly as they scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to draw closer at 14-11. The Pirates were held scoreless the rest of the game while the Gators inched closer in the sixth scoring one run to take the score to 14-12.
The Pirates went quietly in the seventh only getting one batter to reach base. The Gators then lead off the bottom of the seventh with a hit by pitch, followed by an error. The home team would score one. With one out and two runners on, the Gators’ catcher delivered a walk-off three-run homerun to end the game and send the Pirates home as the losing team 15-14.
Hitting leaders on the day were: Josh Barber 4-5 with a homerun; Byron Buxton 4-5 with a double. Also, Dylan Hutchinson hit his first career homerun in the second inning. The homerun marked the ninth different Pirate batter to go deep this season. The Pirates will face Toombs County at 6:00 p.m. Friday night in an important region contest. Toombs enters the game 8-1 and 3-1 in the region. The loss came on Tuesday at the hands of cross-county rival Vidalia 17-13.
Pirates Win Close One at Long County
The Pirates took the field on Tuesday night in Ludowici with a record of 7-3 and 3-1 in region play. They took on Long County in a very important Region 2AA contest. The Pirates managed to squeak by the scrappy Blue Tide 6-5.
The Tide got on the board first as they scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to lead 1-0 after three innings. The Pirates took the lead in the top half of the fourth inning when Jeremy Ammons lead off the inning and got hit by a pitch. Next batter senior Kyle Fennell hit his first career homerun to put the Pirates up 2-1. The Pirates would add another run in the inning to stretch the lead to 3-1.
The Blue Tide would answer with three runs of their own to take the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth. The Pirates tied the game with a single run in the top of the fifth to take the lead back 5-4. The Tide failed to score in the bottom half. The Appling nine would again start a rally in the top of the sixth scoring two more runs. The big blow was a homerun by Tyler Avera, his third of the year.Appling County would only surrender one more run in the bottom of the sixth and left runners stranded in the seventh to make the final score 6-5. The win took the Pirates record to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the region.
Pirates Beat Bears 10-4
The Pirates hosted the Pierce County Bears on Friday night in another region contest. The Pirates prevailed 10-4.
The Pirates jumped on the Bears early as they scored four times in the bottom of the first inning. The rally started with a leadoff single by Josh Barber. Tyler Avera reached safely and Byron Buxton bounced back to the mound and the Bear pitcher threw the ball away trying to get Barber at third. Barber scored on the throwing error and Buxton and Avera moved into scoring position. Kyle Miller stepped up and delivered a solid single up the middle to drive home two runs. Miller would later score on a two out hit by Kyle Fennell. Pirates lead 4-0 after one.
The Bears scored one in the top half of the inning without the benefit of a hit. The Pirates answered right back with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Barber again got things going with a single. He scored on a hit by Buxton with one out. The score was 5-1 after two innings of play.
The Bears clawed their way back into the game as they scored another run in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth. The score after four was 5-4 in favor of the home Pirates.
The Pirates scored one on an RBI groundout by Jeremy Ammons in the bottom of the fifth. The home team would rally for four big runs in the sixth to seal the deal. The inning started with back-to-back singles by Justin Javis and Barber. A triple by Avera would plate two runs. Buxton was hit by a pitch. Buxton brought the crowd to its feet when he scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch to make the score 10-4.
Jeremy Ammons shut down the Bears in the seventh to secure the third region win for the Pirates. Tyler Avera started on the mound and went four innings. He allowed four runs on five hits, and walked two. Ammons pitched three innings of relief allowing no runs and only two hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Pirates Take Second Region Win, Defeat Warriors 11-4
The Pirates entered Tuesday’s game with a 5-3 overall record and 1-1 region record. The visiting Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors entered the game with a record of 3-2 overall and 1-1 record.
Josh Barber would get the start for the Pirates on the mound. The game was scoreless until the top half of the third inning when the Warriors batted around and scored four runs on three hits. The Pirates answered in the bottom half of the third with two runs of their own.
The scoring got started with a leadoff walk to Justin Javis, followed by an infield single by Gage Patton. Tyler Avera reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases. A ground ball off the bat of Byron Buxton would drive in the first Pirate run of the night as an out was made on a fielder’s choice at second base. Kyle Miller followed with an RBI single to left. The score was 4-2 after three innings.
The Pirate bats came up big again in the fourth scoring four more runs to make the score 6-4 after four. The rally started again on a leadoff walk, this time by Jeremy Ammons. Ammons stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kyle Fennell. Javis singled with two outs, Patton walked, then Tyler Avera doubled down the left field line to score one run. With men on second and third Buxton singled to score two more runs.
The Pirates would score five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 11-4.
Barber would settle down on the mound after the rocky third inning. At one point he struck out out five Warriors in a row. Barber finished the night with ten strikeouts, giving up six hits and walking two. Colby Baucom came on to pitch a 1-2-3 seventh to close it out.
The Pirates face Pierce County at home in another region matchup on Friday night @ 6pm.
