The Appling County Retired Educators met on May 16 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannan. Elizabeth Dunn gave the inspiration. She read, “How to Plant Your Garden.” Sgt. Roscoe Davis led the pledge to the flag. Dr. Juanita Nails-James led the group in singing, “The More We Get Together”. President Buchannan welcomed guests Valedictorian Taylor Dominy and her parents, Sandy and Andy Dominy, Salutatorian Brooke Sikes and her parents, Sharon and Jimmy Sikes and Georgia Teacher of the Year, Pam Williams.
The minutes from the April 2012 meeting were read by the secretary and approved. Elizabeth Dunn gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved. Eveline Peacock reported she mailed six cards. Val Rump reported 40 members turned in a total of 1,247 volunteer hours. Anna Lee Lightsey gave the report on the items collected for the food bank. Ninety-three pounds of food was collected at the April meeting. A total of 1408 pounds of food has been donated with Appling County Retired Educators volunteering 71 hours during the month of April at the food bank.
Buchannan recognized Valedictorian Taylor Dominy and Salutatorian Brooke Sikes and presented both of them with certificates. Pam Williams, 2011 Georgia Teacher of the Year, entertained the group with a slide show of her amazing year. She traveled to Washington, D.C. with her son and 54 other teachers of the year. Pam toured the White House and met the president and had lunch at the Vice-President’s home hosted by Mrs. Biden. She also told of her adventure at the Space Camp in Huntsville, AL.
Patsy Buchannan, Alberta King, Val and Bob Rump and Jenean and James Twiggs attended the state convention, which was held at Callaway Gardens on May 1-3. Several members read the certificates that were given to the Appling County Retired Educators Association at the convention. The 2013 convention will be held at Stone Mountain.
Bob Rump reported Appling County was number one in the state with 100 Spotlight ads. He also reported that if the AARP’s Driver Safety Course is taken, there is a 10 percent off on car insurance. A major insurance company will give the local organizations $6.00 for each estimate a member goes on line and gets for their car insurance.
The slate of officers were presented and voted on for the 2012-2013 year. The officers are: President Bob Rump, President-Elect Carolyn Wade, Secretary Gretchen Miles and Treasurer Elizabeth Dunn.
There were 47 in attendance. Elizabeth Dunn gave the blessing for the meal.
The president adjourned the meeting.
